Great Walking Apps for Phones

By Jennifer

If you are a walker there are a lot of great apps for iphones, Blackberries and other smart phones out there on the market and most of them are cheap, have trail versions that are free or are completely free.

Highly rated is the Walk meter which is one of the most advanced of the iPhone applications for exercise walking. You do not have to log into a website as is true of many of these sorts of apps. You simply check in to record your time, location, distance, elevation and speed.  You can view your walking results of maps graphs and a calendar.  The app also has configurable announcements that tell you your time, speed, distance and elevation.  You can also ghost race against your last best time.

Runtastic is the equivalent app for the Blackberry to the Walkmeter. It has all the same features plus an amazing GPS map. On Runtastic you can also measure calories burnt on other activities such as cross-country skiing and biking.  You can record your daily records and then also try and compete with yourself to beat your personal best the next time you exercise.  You can also get Runtastic for Android phones too. Runtastic will also make those verbal announcements telling you what calories you burned or how far you have gone.

A highly recommended app for all three phones is iMap My Walk which has apps for walkers, runners and hikers. You can record your workout details, including duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, and route traveled on an interactive map. You can even effortlessly save and upload your workout data to websites where you can view your route workout data, and comprehensive workout history.

Simple walking time and pedometer apps are also available for all kinds of smarts phones.  Almost all of them use GPS to measure speed, distance walked and location.  One of the great things about the programs is their capability for allowing you to compete with yourself which is very motivating for some people. The calories lost are calculated using weight and height and other settings.  Then the distance you go is measured by GPS so your calorie burn is measured accurately.

The nice thing about this app and other apps like it is that it can really help you achieve your goals. You end up competing with yourself to reduce the number of calories that you burned off the day before.
